Chromios the Wit's Edge

Chromios the Wit's Edge (died 422 BC) was the pro-Athenian King of Messenia during the Peloponnesian War.

Biography[]

Chromios the Wit's Edge carried a sword, though no blade was as sharp as his tongue. To him peace was the product of a strong alliance. And an alliance was the product of an enemy Chromios had shamed.

In 422 BC, Athens installed Chromios as its puppet ruler of Messenia. As Sparta invaded Messenia, Chromios wandered in the city to raise public support, but he was assassinated in the street by the Spartan mercenary Kassandra.
