Christopher Grant Champlin (12 April 1768 – 18 March 1840) was a member of the US House of Representatives from Rhode Island's at-large district from 4 March 1797 to 4 March 1801 (succeeding Elisha Reynolds Potter and preceding Thomas Tillinghast) and a US Senator from 26 June 1809 to 2 October 1811 (succeeding Francis Malbone and preceding William Hunter). He was a member of the Federalist Party.
Biography[]
Christopher Grant Champlin was born in Newport, Rhode Island on 12 April 1768, and he studied at Harvard and in France. He lost a fortune speculating in the stock market, but he later lied about his southern land interests in order to be elected to the US House of Representatives; he was re-elected despite the revelation of the truth. In 1809, he was appointed to finish Francis Malbone's term in the US Senate, only to resign in 1811. He commanded the Newport Artillery Company from 1815 to 1818, and he died in 1840.
