Christopher Carleill (1551-1593) was an English Royal Navy captain who served as Sir Francis Drake's right-hand man during his 1586 Caribbean raid.
Biography[]
Christopher Carleill was born in London, England in 1551, and he became the stepson of Francis Walsingham from his mother's remarriage. When his mother died in 1564, Carleill came under Walsingham's care, and he was educated at the University of Cambridge before joining the Dutch Revolt in 1572. Carleill fought with the Dutch Navy against the Spanish, and, in 1584, he became an English commander in Ireland. In 1586, he participated in Sir Francis Drake's raid on the Caribbean, commanding his landing parties. In 1588, he served as Constable of Carrickfergus before becoming Governor of Ulster, and he died in London in 1593.
