The Christian and Democratic Union - Czechoslovak People's Party (KDU-CSL), formerly known as the Czechoslovak People's Party (CSL), is a Christian democratic political party in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic that was founded in January 1919. The party was created in Prague to unite several Catholic parties, with Jan Sramek serving as the CSL's first leader. After the German occupation of Czechoslovakia, Sramek headed the Czechoslovak government-in-exile, and it formed the most right-wing part of the national unity government after 1945. After the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia's February 1948 seizure of power, many CSL leaders were imprisoned, and it was allowed to keep a token presence in politics in exchange for it becoming a puppet of the communist regime. In 1992, the party renamed itself to the KDU-CSL, and it was in government from 1990 to 1998, from 2002 to 2010, and from 2013.
