Christian Wakeford

Christian Wakeford (born 9 November 1984) was the Labour (Conservative until 2022) MP for Bury South from 12 December 2019, succeeding Ivan Lewis.

Biography[]

Christian Wakeford was born in Burnley, Lancashire, England in 1984, and he worked as an account manager for a telecommunications company and as an insurance broker before entering politics with the Conservative Party. He served as a a Local Education Authority governor for Colne Park High School from 2009 to 2017, a Conservative county councillor for the Pendle Hill division on the Lancashire County Council from 2013, and MP for Bury South from 2019, winning the seat from long-term Labour MP Ivan Lewis. Wakeford broke with the Conservative Party over the Owen Paterson scandal and the "Partygate" scandal of 2021, and, on 19 January 2022, he submitted a no-confidence bill in Boris Johnson and also announced his defection to Labour, as he believed that the changes needed by his constituents could only be delivered by Keir Starmer.
