The Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU) was a Christian democratic political party in Germany that was founded in 1945 as the successor of the pre-World War II Bavarian People's Party. The CSU partnered with the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) to form the CDU/CSU electoral alliance, which dominated German politics for decades. By itself, it held only 56 of 630 Bundestag seats, making it the smallest of the five parties represented. From 1966 to 2013, the CSU dominated the Bavarian landtag goverment, and it regained power in 2013, holding 101/180 Landtag seats in 2017. The party also advocates Bavarian regionalism, promoting Bavarian interests in German politics.
