Christian Hardwick (died 1780) was a resident of Pembroke, South Carolina at the time of the American Revolutionary War.
Biography[]
Christian Hardwick was born in Pembroke, South Carolina, and he initially supported the Patriots during the American Revolutionary War, speaking in favor of independence at Peter Howard's dinner table. However, he was cowardly, and he opposed Gabriel Martin's efforts to recruit Pembroke residents into the colonial militia. In 1780, when William Tavington offered clemency to anyone in Pembroke who would betray Benjamin Martin's guerrillas, Hardwick revealed Howard's support of the guerrillas and said that they were based out of the old Spanish mission at Black Swamp. Rather than remain true to his word, however, Tavington had all of the townspeople locked in the church as his Green Dragoons torched the building, killing all of those inside.
