
Christopher Andrew "Chris" Coons (born 9 September 1963) was a US Senator from Delaware from 15 November 2010, succeeding Ted Kaufman.
Biography[]
Christopher Andrew Coons was born in Greenwich, Connecticut on 9 September 1963 and raised in Hockessin, Delaware, and he graduated from Amherst College and Yale Law School. In college, Coons was a member of the Republican Party, supporting Ronald Reagan during his 1980 presidential campaign; however, he would later switch to being a Democratic Party supporter. Coons worked as a voluntary relief worker in Kenya, and he worked for the Coalition for the Homeless back in New York. In 1996, he returned to Delaware after working as a legal clerk in New York, and he worked for a materials manufacturing company and several nonprofit organizations. In 1996, he became a Democratic delegate for the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, and he was elected to the New Castle County Council in 2000. From 2001 to 2005, he served as the council's president, and he served as county executive from 2005 to 2010. In 2010, he defeated Republican Party candidate Christine O'Donnell to win election to the US Senate, and he served on several committees. As a member of the Judiciary Committee, he took part in the government's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential elections and Donald Trump's possible ties to Russia.
