Chotaro Muraoka (12 December 1871 – 19 May 1930) was the commander of the Kwantung Army from 26 August 1927 to 1 July 1929, succeeding Nobuyoshi Muto and preceding Eitaro Hata.
Biography[]
Chotaro Muraoka was born on 12 December 1871 and graduated from the fifth class of the Imperial Japanese Army Academy alongside Takashi Hishikari, Kanaya Hansan, Kishimoto Shikataro, Toyohiko Yoshida, and Toyohisa Matsue. He served as a staff officer with a division during the Russo-Japanese War, and he was an observer of the First Balkan War alongside the Ottoman Empire's army. In 1927, Muraoka was appointed commander of the Kwantung Army and masterminded the Huanggutun incident of 4 June 1928, where warlord Zhang Zuolin was assassinated by Japan. He left command in 1929, and he died a year later.
