Chipping Barnet, also known as High Barnet, is a suburban market town in the London Borough of Barnet, Greater London, England. Located 10.5 miles northwest of Charing Cross, its Anglo-Saxon name Barneto was first recorded in 1070; its name means "the land cleared by burning" in Old English, while "Chipping" refers to the market established in Barnet at the end of the 12th century. In 1471, Chipping Barnet was the site of the decisive Battle of Barnet during the Wars of the Roses. During the following centuries, the area around the old market was developed and Barnet became a wealthy suburb of north London; it was also a stronghold of the Conservative Party, which won the Barnet (later Chipping Barnet) constituency in every parliamentary election since 1950. In 2011, Chipping Barnet had 47,359 residents.
