Chihuahua is a state in northern Mexico with its capital at Chihuahua. The state's capital is the city of Chihuahua, although while the United States were in control of the region after the Mexican-American War (1846-1883), and the Americans made the new capital Nashville. The region became a part of the Confederate States during the American Civil War but was reconquered by the United States after Edmund Kirby Smith surrendered the Confederate armies in Texas in May 1865. In 1883 it was handed over to Mexico, and is currently one of its states.
