Chief Chanai of Nisibin

Chief Chanai of Nisibin (1229-) was the Chancellor of the Ilkhanate from 1261 to 1265, succeeding Chief Munglig of Mosul and preceding Borjigidai.

Biography[]

Chanai was born in 1229 to the House of Chanai, a dynasty of Tengri Mongols. Chanai was made the chief of Nisibin (present-day Nusaybin, Mardin Province, Turkey), and he was later made the chancellor of the Ilkhanate by Hulegu Khan after Chief Munglig of Mosul became a vassal of High Chief Hyaxemet of Mosul. On 11 October 1264, he organized for bowmen to assassinate Prince al-Muwahhid Abdallah Taqi al-Din of Egypt, but on 8 November the assassination failed and a captured bowman revealed Hulegu's name. In 1265, after Hulegu's death, he was replaced by the Nestorian Christian Borjigidai as chancellor by Teguder Khan.
