Chicago Loop

The Chicago Loop, also known as Downtown Chicago, is the central business district of Chicago, Illinois. The area's first American settlers arrived in 1803, founding Fort Dearborn on Lake Michigan; Chicago was platted in 1830. The Sauganash Hotel was founded in 1831, and the area was bustling until the end of the decade. In 1882, a trolley loop was built in the area, giving it its nickname. "The Loop" was used as a proper noun following the 1895-1897 construction of the Union elevated railway loop. The area's last Republican alderman left office in 1897, and it was dominated by the Democratic Party since then. By 2018, the Chicago Loop had a population of 37,647 people, 62.28% of whom were white, 17.42% Asian, 8.93% African-American, 8.25% Hispanic, and 3.11% other.
