Chi Onwurah

Chi Onwurah (born 12 April 1965) was the Labour Party MP for Newcastle upon Tyne Central from 6 May 2010, succeeding Jim Cousins.

Biography[]

Chinyelu Susan Onwurah was born in Wallsend, NorthumberlandEngland on 12 April 1965, the daughter of a Nigerian dentist and his English wife. She served on the National Executive of the Anti-Apartheid Movement during the 1980s, and she went on to work as head of telecoms technology at Ofcom. In 2010, she was elected to Parliament to succeed the retiring Labour MP Jim Cousins, becoming the first black MP from the city.
