Chez Porter was a ranch located in Carbon County, Wyoming, around 10 miles north of Hanna and 18 miles northwest of Medicine Bow. The ranch was established by the Porter family, who lived in isolation for so long that the family replenished through inbreeding and developed their own dialect. Pappy Porter and his children Mal, Edie, Newt, and Finney Porter took part in highway robberies and kidnappings near the major frontier town of Medicine Bow, and their ranch also served as a hideout for the Skinner Brothers, who occasionally stashed their stolen contraband there (leading to a shootout with their rival Flaco Hernandez's associate, the Arizona Kid, in 1898). In 1899, the Porter family was killed in a shootout with the Van der Linde Gang outlaws Arthur Morgan and Javier Escuella, who also robbed the homestead.
