The Cherusci were a Germanic tribe which inhabited the area around Hanover in northwestern Germany. In 12 BC, the Cherusci and other Germanic tribes were subjugated by the Roman Empire, and their chief Arminius defeated the Romans at the Battle of Teutoburg Forest, annihilating three Roman legions. In the fourth century AD, they contributed to the formation of the Saxons.
