Chen An

Chen An (died 323) was the self-proclaimed "Prince of Liang" in the 4th century during the Sixteen Kingdoms period of China.

Biography[]

Chen An was a former subordinate of Eastern Jin general Sima Bao, but he entered the service of Han Zhao under Emperor Guangchu of Han Zhao. In 322, he took part in his campaign against the Di chief Yang Nandi, during which Guangchu fell ill. Believing that the emperor was dead, Chen An declared independence as "Prince of Liang", controlling Qin Province in eastern Gansu, but Emperor Guangchu recovered and campaigned against the treacherous Chen the next year. Chen was besieged at Shanggui (Tianshui), and he was captured and killed after attempting to flee the Han Zhao army.
