Chelsea, Manhattan is a neighborhood on the west side of Manhattan, New York City, located to the south of Hell's Kitchen and to the north of the Meatpacking District and Greenwich Village. Chelsea was settled on 16 August 1750 by British Army Major Thomas Clarke, who named his farm after the Royal Hospital Chelsea retirement home for soldiers in London, England. During the 1800s, the area would be industrialized, with a railroad being built in the area in 1847. During the late 20th and early 21st centuries, it would become home to a large gay population (22% of the population), diverse restaurants, and large stores, and it had a population of 38,242 by 2010.
