The Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was an autonomous republic of the Russian SFSR in the Soviet Union, existing from 15 January 1934 to May 1991. The republic's capital was Grozny, and the republic had a population of 1,155,805 people in 1979, with 611,405 being Chechens and 134,744 Ingushes. The republic's autonomy was removed from 1944 to 1957 as a result of Joseph Stalin's persecution of the Chechens, but its autonomy was restored in 1957, and the republic would be a part of the USSR until it declared independence as the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria in May 1991.
