Chauncey Vibbard

Chauncey Vibbard (11 November 1811-5 June 1891) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-NY 18) from 4 March 1861 to 3 March 1863, succeeding Clark B. Cochrane and preceding James M. Marvin.

Biography[]

Chauncey Vibbard was born in Galway, Saratoga County New York in 1811, and he worked as a grocery clerk in Albany before settling in Schenectady in 1836. He became a railroad freight and ticket agent in 1848, and he later came to be an owner of the New York Central Railroad. He served in the US House of Representatives from 1861 to 1863, and he served as the Union's superintendent of military railroads during the American Civil War and supported George B. McClellan's 1864 presidential bid. He moved to New York City in 1865, and he retired from business in 1869 and moved to Macon, Georgia for his health. He died there in 1891.
