Chauncey Smith (1879-1973) was a British Army captain who served on the Western Front of World War I. In 1917, he aided Lance Corporal Will schofield in his journey to Écoust-Saint-Mein to deliver important orders to the 2nd Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, meeting Schofield at the site of his friend and comrade Tom Blake's death and advising him not to dwell on his friend's loss. He then allowed Schofield to accompany him and his men on a convoy of "Casual" (soldiers separated from their units) trucks as they traveled to Écoust-Saint-Mein, and, as Schofield left, Smith advised him to ensure that there were witnesses when he delivered his orders to Lieutenant-Colonel Benedict Mackenzie, as he warned that some men wanted to fight.
