Chatham is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey. In 1680, the English purchased the rights to the area from the Lenape Native Americans, and the first European settlement occurred in 1710. In 1773, the village was named "Chatham" after William Pitt the Elder, the first Earl of Chatham. On 12 February 1806, the village became part of the greater township, but it became a borough on 1 March 1897. In 2016, Chatham had a population of 8,977 people.
