Charlie Hales

Charles Andrew Hales (22 January 1956-) was the Democratic Mayor of Portland, Oregon from 1 January 2013 to 1 January 2017, succeeding Sam Adams and preceding Ted Wheeler.

Biography[]

Charles Andrew Hales was born in Washington DC in 1956, and he was raised in Alexandria, Virginia before attending college in Portland, Oregon and working as a lobbyist. He served on the City Council from 1993 to 2002, when he resigned to work for an engineering firm, and he went on to serve as Mayor from 2013 to 2017. He controversially chose not to enforce anti-camping laws on sidewalks and rights of way amid a homelessness crisis in his city, and was also accused of failing on police accountability. He was defeated for re-election in 2016.
