Charles of Denmark

Charles thte Good (1084-2 March 1127) was Count of Flanders from 1119 to 1127, succeeding Baldwin VII and preceding William Clito.

Biogrpahy[]

Charles was born in 1084, the son of King Canute IV of Denmark and Adela of Flanders. His father was murdered when he was two years old, and he was taken to Flanders by his mother. In 1092, his father abandoned him to marry Roger Borsa in Apulia, and he took part in a crusade to Palestine in 1107-1108, refusing the throne of the Kingdom of Jerusalem for unknown reasons. In 1111, his cousin Baldwin VII of Flanders became Count, and he made his older cousin Charles his advisor. Charles succeeded his cousin on his death in battle in 1118, and he expelled the Jews from Flanders in 1125, blaming them for price gouging amid a famine; he personally distributed bread to the poor and took action against grain hoarding. In 1127, the popular count Charles was hacked to death at church by knights hired by the rival Erembald family, and he was beatified in 1882.
