Charles Zidler

Charles-Joseph Zidler (29 December 1831-10 November 1897) was a French theatre impresario who co-founded the Moulin Rouge cabaret in 1889.

Biography[]

Charles-Joseph Zidler was born in Saint Cloud, Paris, France in 1831, and he opened a shoe store before becoming an entrepreneur in the creative arts, founding a circus in 1877, a cafe-concert at the Jardin de Paris in 1885, the Russian Mountains roller-coaster in 1888, the Moulin Rouge cabaret in 1889, and the Olympia Room in 1893. He imposed the can-can dance as the Moulin Rouge's star attraction, and he hired many famous artists. He died in Paris in 1897 at the age of 65.
