Charles Tillinghast James (15 September 1805 – 17 October 1862) was a US Senator from Rhode Island (D) from 4 March 1851 to 4 March 1857, succeeding Albert C. Greene and preceding James F. Simmons.

Charles Tillinghast James was born in West Greenwich, Rhode Island in 1805, and he worked as a mechanical engineer, developing a rifling system for artillery that would lead to the creation of the "James rifle" of Fort Pulaski fame. James would go on to serve as a US Senator from Rhode Island from 1851 to 1857, and he died in 1862.
