Charles Stanforth (1898 - 1979) was a British historian and archaeologist and Dean of students of Marshall College between 1952 and 1960.
Biography[]
Charles Stanforth was born in Lincoln, England in 1898. He studied at The University of Cambridge between 1916 and 1921. In 1922, he emigrated to the United States. Charles Stanforth was married to an American woman called Deirdre with whom he had two children: Don and Maggie Stanforth.
He was a professor at Marshall College, in Princeton, New Jersey. He was also the substitute teacher of Henry Jones Jr.'s students when he was travelling around the globe in some archaeological expedition. Before Marcus Brody's death in 1952, Stanforth was acquainted and friends with him, and became his successor as dean of students at Marshall College. In 1957, the FBI ransacked Indiana Jones' office, which scared the administration at Marshall College into pushing for him to be fired. Charles Stanforth succeeded in getting the concession that he be placed on indefinite leave with pay, but to do this, Stanforth had to tender his own resignation.
After the affair of the Crystal Skull of Akator, and the clearing of Jones' reputation, Stanforth was presumably reinstated as Dean, and Indiana Jones became Associate Dean. Stanforth and his family attended Jones and Marion Ravenwood's wedding, using Stanforth's Book of Common Prayer in the ceremony, which had to be rushed from its place in Stanforth's office desk. Charles Stanforth retired in 1960. He was succeeded by Jones as Dean of students of Marshall College until his retirement in 1964. Stanforth returned to England, where he died in Brighton in 1979.
