Charles Nelson Herreid (20 October 1857-6 July 1928) was the Republican Governor of South Dakota from 8 January 1901 to 3 January 1905, succeeding Andrew E. Lee and preceding Samuel H. Elrod.

Biography[]

Charles Nelson Herreid was born in Dane County, Wisconsin in 1857 to Norwegian immigrant parents, and he moved to McPherson County, South Dakota in 1883. He served as a county judge from 1888 to 1891, as Lieutenant Governor from 1892 to 1896, and as Governor from 1901 to 1905, attempting to reform his state's penal code, reducing railroad rates to ease the plight of farmers, working for growth in state schools, developing roads, bringing big business interests under control, and curbing the power of political machines. He returned to his legal practice in Aberdeen, where he died in 1928.
