Charles MacCarty, Viscount Muskerry (1633-3 June 1665) was an Irish royalist general who served in the Anglo-Spanish War and the Anglo-Dutch Wars.
Biography[]
Charles MacCarty was born in Macroom Castle, County Cork, Ireland in 1633, the son of Donough MacCarty, 1st Earl of Clancarty. In 1647, during the English Civil War, Charles' father sent him to France with a regiment to take service in King Louis XIV's army, and he went on to serve in the Franco-Spanish War. In 1658, he served under the Duke of York at the Battle of the Dunes, and he remained in Dunkirk with his regiment in 1662. He served in the Royal Navy during the Second Anglo-Dutch War, and he was killed at the Battle of Lowestoft in 1662.
