Charles L. Robinson

Charles Lawrence Robinson (21 July 1818-17 August 1894) was the Republican Governor of Kansas from 9 February 1861 to 12 January 1863, succeeding Samuel Medary and preceding Thomas Carney.

Biography[]

Charles Lawrence Robinson was born in Hardwick, Massachusetts, and he practiced medicine in Belchertown, Springfield, and Fitchburg. He traveled overland to California in 1849, edited the Settler's and Miner's Tribune in 1850, served in the State Assembly as a Whig from 1851 to 1852, and he returned to Massachusetts in 1852. In 1854, he migrated to Kansas and cofounded Lawrence, and he passionately supported the Free Soilers during Bleeding Kansas. He served as Governor of the newly admitted state of Kansas from 1861 to 1863, and he was impeached for the mishandling of funds raised for the Union Army during the American Civil War. Elected to the State Senate, he served from 1873 to 1881, and he died in 1894.
