Charles Humphreys

Charles Humphreys (19 September 1714 – 11 March 1786) was a member of the Continental Congress from Pennsylvania during the American Revolutionary War.

Biography[]

Charles Humphreys was born in Haverford, Pennsylvania in 1714 to a Quaker family, and he was a slave owner, miller, and fuller before serving in the Continental Congress from 1774 to 1776. Humphreys opposed the US Declaration of Independence lest it escalate the American Revolutionary War, and he withdrew from Congress shortly after. He ran a grist mill until his death in 1786.
