Charles Hamilton

Charles Hamilton (died July 1861) was a Confederate States Army officer during the American Civil War.

Biography[]

Charles Hamilton was born in Clayton County, Georgia, the son of Colonel William R. Hamilton and the brother of Melanie Hamilton. He was one of the last members of a wealthy dynasty of planters, and, in 1861, he married the southern belle Scarlett O'Hara, a member of another prominent planting family. That same year, he enthusiastically joined the Confederate States Army at the start of the American Civil War, joining Wade Hampton III's cavalry legion. He named his son with Scarlett "Wade Hampton Hamilton" in honor of his commanding officer, but he died less than two months after his enlistment from pneumonia, which had arisen from his measles complications.
