
Charles Henry Sheldon (12 September 1840-20 October 1898) was the Republican Governor of South Dakota from 3 January 1893 to 1 Janaury 1897, succeeding Arthur C. Mellette and preceding Andrew E. Lee.
Biography[]
Charles Henry Sheldon was born in Johnson, Vermont in 1840, and he joined the abolitionist movement before serving in the Union Army during the American Civil War. After the war, he entered the mercantile business in Pope County, Illinois, and he also lived in Chicago before moving to Groton in the Dakota Territory because of his son's health. He became a farmer before entering politics in 1886 and being elected to the Territorial Legislature, and he served as Governor of South Dakota from 1893 to 1897. He retired to his farm near Pierpont in 1897 and died in 1898.
