
Charles H. Ramsey (1950-) was Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia from 1998 to 2006 (succeeding Sonya Proctor and preceding Cathy L. Lanier) and Commissioner of the Philadelphia Police Department from 2008 to 2016 (succeeding Sylvester Johnson and preceding Richard Ross Jr.).
Biography[]
Charles H. Ramsey was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1950, and he joined the CPD as an 18-year-old cadet in 1968. After serving six years as a patrol officer, he became a sergeant in 1977, and he became a lieutenant in 1984 and captain in 1988. From 1989 to 1992, he was in charge of the Narcotics Section, and he served as Deputy Chief of the Patrol Division before becoming Deputy Superintendent in 1994. In 1998, he became Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia in Washington DC, and he focused attention on security issues around the capital after the 9/11 attacks. He went on to serve as Commissioner of the Philadelphia Police Department from 2008 to 2016, and he retired in 2016.
