Charles Hunter Gerhardt (6 June 1895-9 October 1976) was a Major General of the United States who led the US 29th Infantry Division during World War I and World War II.

Biography[]

Charles Hunter Gerhardt was born on 6 June 1895 and was a skilled football quarterback at West Point Military Academy, and he inflicted Notre Dame's only defeat in the year of 1916. He served with the US 89th Infantry Division during World War I and later took command of the US 29th Infantry Division during World War II. In 1944 his division landed at Normandy in France, but they suffered very heavy losses during the breakout and many of the 29th were folded into the US 90th Infantry Division due to the small amount of troops in the 29th. After the war, he served as defense attache to Brazil and died in 1976.
