
Charles Godfrey Gunther (7 April 1822-22 January 1885) was the Democratic Mayor of New York City from 1864 to 1866, succeeding George Opdyke and preceding John T. Hoffman.
Biography[]
Charles Godfrey Gunther was born in New York City, New York in 1822, and he joined his German immigrant family's fur business before becoming a volunteer firefighter and joining the Democratic Tammany Hall political organization. He lost the 1861 mayoral election due to divisions between William M. Tweed's Tammany Hall and Fernando Wood's Mozart Hall Democratic factions, but he was elected in 1864. After leaving politics, he became a railroad executive, and he died in 1885.
