Charles Gilpin (17 November 1809 – 29 October 1891) was Mayor of Philadelphia (W) from 15 October 1850 to 13 June 1854 (succeeding Joel Jones and preceding Robert T. Conrad).
Biography[]
Charles Gilpin was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1809, and he was admitted to the bar in 1834. He was elected to the Philadelphia City Council in 1840 and served as Mayor from 1850 to 1854, overseeing the combination of Philadelphia city with Philadelphia County, the creation of the offices of city treasurer and city controller, and the expansion of the city government's powers. He became solicitor to the Philadelphia County Sheriff in 1858, and he also served as a US Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and as an elections supervisor. He died in 1891.
