
Charles Gordon Atherton (4 July 1804 – 15 November 1853) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-NH 1) from 4 March 1837 to 3 March 1843 (succeeding Benning M. Bean and preceding Moses Norris, Jr.) and a US Senator from 4 March 1843 to 3 March 1849 (succeeding Leonard Wilcox and preceding Norris) and from 4 March to 15 November 1853 (succeeding John P. Hale and preceding Jared W. Williams).
Biography[]
Charles Gordon Atherton was born in Amherst, New Hampshire in 1804, the son of Charles Humphrey Atherton. He became a lawyer in 1825, and he served in the state legislature before serving in the US House of Representatives from 1837 to 1843 and in the US Senate from 1843 to 1849. In 1853, he returned to the Senate, but he died from a stroke.
