Charles Berkeley, 1st Earl of Falmouth

Charles Berkeley, 1st Earl of Falmouth (11 January 1630-3 June 1665) was an English nobleman and naval officer who served in the Anglo-Dutch Wars.

Biography[]

Charles Berkeley was born in 1630, the son of Charles Berkeley, 2nd Viscount Fitzhardinge. He served as a cavalry officer in the French and Spanish armies, and he was created Earl of Falmouth in 1664, served as MP for New Romney from 1661 to 1664, and served in the Royal Navy during the Anglo-Dutch Wars. He was killed by a cannonball while serving aboard the Royal Charles at the Battle of Lowestoft.
