Charles Aurelius Smith (22 January 1861-1 April 1916) was the Democratic Governor of South Carolina from 14 to 19 January 1915, succeeding Coleman Livingston Blease and preceding Richard Irvine Manning III.
Biography[]
Charles Aurelius Smith was born in Hertford County, South Carolina in 1861, and he was raised in Timmonsville and became a banker and businessman. He served in the State House from 1909 to 1911, as Lieutenant Governor from 1911 to 1915, and as Governor for five days in 1915 after Coleman Livingston Blease's resignation, making him the shortest-serving governor in the state's history. He moved to Baltimore that same year, and he died in 1916.
