Charles Anderson (1 June 1814-2 September 1895) was the Republican Governor of Ohio from 29 August 1865 to 8 January 1866, succeeding John Brough and preceding Jacob Dolson Cox.
Biography[]
Charles Anderson was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1814, and he moved to Dayton, Ohio in 1843 to become a lawyer and, later, county prosecutor. Anderson served in the State Senate from 1844 to 1846 and advocated for Black rights, and he later moved to Texas for health reasons and gave an anti-secessionist speech in San Antonio in December 1860, leading to local pro-Confederates forcing Anderson to flee back to Dayton. Anderson commanded the 93rd Ohio Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War and was wounded at the Battle of Stones River, and Anderson went on to serve as Lieutenant Governor from 1864 to 1865 and as Governor from 1865 to 1866. He returned to Kentucky, and he died in Kuttawa in 1895.
