Charente-Maritime is a department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of western France, with La Rochelle serving as its capital. It was one of the 83 original departments created during the French Revolution in 1790, and the Germans heavily fortified Charente-Maritime during World War II; the Germans held onto La Rochelle until the end of the war on 9 May 1945. Charente-Maritime was a conservative stronghold, and it had a population of 651,358 people in 2019.
