Charente

Charente is a department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of southwestern France, with Angouleme serving as its capital. Named for the River Charente, beside which Angouleme and Cognac are sited, the Charente department was one of the 83 original departments created in 1790 during the French Revolution. The region's wine industry petered out during the late 19th century, but Charente became a popular retirement destination for immigrants, especially British. The region was a Socialist Party stronghold, and it had a population of 352,015 people in 2019.
