Champagne is a historical province in northeastern France, founded in 1065. The region is named for the Campania region of Italy, with the rolling hills of Champagne reminding the Romans of the province, during their settlement of Gaul. Troyes, Reims, and Epernay are the major cities of the region, which is well-known for the sparkling white wine that bears its name. During World War I, Champagne was a major battleground, and it was the site of the bloody Second Battle of Champagne in 1915.
