Chama Cha Mapinduzi is a democratic socialist political party in Tanzania that was founded on 5 February 1977 by Julius Nyerere. The party was founded as a merger of the Tanganyika African National Union of Tanzania and the Afro-Shirazi Party of Zanzibar, and it originally championed African socialism. The party supported the firmly left-wing Ujamaa system of collectivized agriculture, but it later espoused a more neoliberal approach and supported economic modernization and free market policies. The party dominated the government, holding 276/393 Bunge seats and 81/85 Zanzibar House of Representatives seats.
