Chalceum was, according to Greek mythology, a Greek city-state in Cyrenaica which was founded by Chalceus during the 13th century BC. Chalceus founded his city in the northern Libyan desert, establishing it primarily as a residential and farming city; however, his city's rivalry with nearby Tyndareum forced him to go to war. Due to Chalceum's piety towards Zeus and Tyndareus' arrogance against Poseidon, the gods unleashed their wrath on Tyndareum and enabled the Chalceans to conquer their rivals and enslave their few survivors.
