Chad the Blind was an Anglo-Saxon clerk who lived in York, Northumbria during the late 9th century AD. In December 875 AD, he was blinded by his boss Burk after he was falsely accused of stealing, and he was then abandoned on a platform under the bridge over the River Ouse. His cries for help were heard by the Viking warrior Eivor, who agreed to carry him back up to the bridge so that he could seek medical attention. Burk returned with two henchmen, and Burk told Eivor to hand over Chad. Burk then had Chad trail behind them as they headed back to Burk's workplace, but Eivor killed Burk's henchmen Åsmund Skjoldsson and Osvald Thormarsson, freeing Chad. Chad told Eivor that he thought his fate was sealed, and he then thanked Eivor and walked off to an uncertain future.
