Cetus (died 1342 BC) was, in Greek mythology, a huge sea monster sent by Poseidon to terrorize Aethiopia in revenge for Cassiopeia's boast that her daughter Andromeda was more beautiful than the Nereids. The hero Perseus rescued Andromeda by using Medusa's severed head to turn Cetus to stone.
