Ceredigion, formerly known as Cardiganshire, is a county in Mid Wales, with Aberaeron and Aberystwyth (its largest town) serving as its capitals. In the late 18th and early 19th century, Ceredigion was heavily industrialized, with lead, silver, and zinc being mined in the region. Cardigan was the primary port of South Wales before the silting of its harbor, and the economy became dependent on dairy farming and livestock. As many people moved to more prosperous parts of Wales, elderly people moved into Ceredigion to retire, and the government encouraged increased migration to the region.
