Cerdic of Wessex (460-534) was King of Wessex from 519 to 534, preceding Cynric. Cerdic was a Saxon ruler, and he led an invasion of England in 495, establishing Anglo-Saxon rule in the country as the first ruler of Wessex.
Biography[]
Cerdic was born in 460, and he was a member of the Saxon tribe. In 495, Cerdic and his son Cynric invaded England with a fleet of five ships, landing in Hampshire. In 508, he defeated and slew the Briton king Natanleod at Netley Marsh, and he also conquered the Isle of Wight. Cerdic established the kingdom of Wessex ("land of the West Saxons") in 519, and he ruled it until his death in 534, upon which his son Cynric succeeded him.
